Jonsbo N2 fan modification

2024-10-07

After seeing some modifications to the Jonsbo N2 NAS case on YouTube and on Reddit in order to accomodate a 25 mm deep fan, I came up with my own non-invasive modification that I want to show here. The reason why the stock configuration doesn't allow to install a deeper fan is the HDD backplane power connection using "Molex" connectors. My idea was to redirect the cables by 180 degrees. A few pictures say more than 1000 words:

The board is populated with 2 female PCB-mounted "Molex" connectors (TE MATE-N-LOK 770997-1) and a terminal block (Phoenix Contact 1991118). Even though the 2 power connectors are most likely overkill, I thought it wouldn't hurt to have them and they give some extra mechanical support. I gave the power connectors' holes some extra clearance to make sure the board will fit. I soldered the power connectors while they were inserted into the backplane to get a perfect fit. Even though not strictly required, I populated the terminal block the other way than I orginally intended to increase clearance between the wires and the underside of the motherboard.

I crimped some female contacts onto 16AWG wires and assembled the Mini-Fit Jr connector required for my Corsair modular PSU. The other ends of the cables are stripped and inserted into the terminal block.

I have some extra (unpopulated) PCBs. If you want one, shoot me an email and I will send one to you at the cost of shipping.
